Sunset Alley

A vibrant pedestrian experience is essential to building a strong sense of community in any urban space. Paper Whale has transformed a two-block stretch of downtown alleyway into a lively cultural corridor. In collaboration with local businesses, we've installed colorful, dynamic artworks that link Bay St. Plaza to one of the city's most iconic sunset views. Featuring work from 12 independent artists, we proudly present: Sunset Alley.  Many of the works are complete (you can visit anytime!), the remaining installations will be completed by the Fall of 2025.

Participating Artists and Locations

A curated selection of local and national artists, Paper Whale procured a series of installations to transform a new pedestrian pathway linking Bellingham's Arts District to the heart of downtown.  Sunset Alley runs between Magnolia and Holly Streets between Commercial and Bay. All project are focused on the alley side of each business. Participating artists include:

The Holly Street corner of the alley features the Coast Salish Living Mural by Coast Salish artists Free Borsey, Raven Borsey, and Roy Nichol. It is depicted on the future home of Children of the Setting Sun, Setting Sun Circle. Children of the Setting Sun also received a grant from the city for
